Day 16 - I do art!

Almost the usual morning routine, with TBP BB 5 for me and a little deck walking for Dave until it got too hot (Walnuts yes, prunes no). During Tai Chi I did take over the class briefly to ask Jorge to put a little more practice time into the last part of the flow, but people seemed ok with it.

Coffee with Dario and junior deck officers Ward (2nd) and Noa (3rd) was very fun. It started off as usual with the sound guy doing his Halloween chuckle into the mic, which always makes everybody laugh. Then Dario and the officers kept tossing “Hey, it’s the equator line!” into the interviews and we’d all throw our hands up and cheer. It makes sure there’s no dead air, that’s for sure.

Instead of Hula there was Lauhala bracelet making class which was on the Lido deck in the full equatorial sunshine. It was hot! Pua our ‘Uke teacher kept bringing everyone water. Mahialani, our Hula teacher, was leading the class and was somewhat disorganized as she often is, but we’re on Island time and bracelets eventually happened.

We had an hour before lunch for reading, and then an hour after as well. Dave did a lot of napping. Yesterday I’d sent in a feedback form complaining about the slow service in the dining room and apparently our room number is now flagged because we were in and out in ½ hour.

Papa ‘ukelele was its usual fun self; our graduation was postponed until tomorrow so we started off with a little Beatles. Pua told us the chords but somehow several of us kept ending up with extra chords left over at the end. Whatever. We practiced our production numbers and we’re all now singing audibly and even loudly. Pua did an imitation of our singing (so, so sotto voce) on the second day that made us all laugh. We’re going to miss her.

I was walking back to the cabin and I got an e-mail from Washington county saying my ballot had been accepted and counted – all that mailing worked! I was thinking I’d get in the pool, , but we ended up looking at our Papeete shore excursion and realizing it wasn’t right for us, so I went down to the Shore Excursion office and exchanged it. On the way back I noticed a line outside the are studio for the watercolor class, so I thought, “why not” and had a good time making art. I’m very proud of many parts of this picture, but next time no bushes.

Then it was time to get ready for dinner and put another load of laundry together. It’s HOT on the Lido and I spend a lot of time sweating out there, so everything needs to be washed after it’s only been worn once. We’re going to be in Northern Australia in 2028, and I need to remember that what I want to wear is lightweight dresses with pockets.

Dinner was fun; Dennis and Louise were at the Canneletto specialty restaurant and I don’t know if it was because there were fewer of us or because Dave and I are on the priority list but our food came much more quickly. Tonight’s desserts were particularly fine.

After dinner we had blogging time and then went to the show, which was Anita Newby singing Detroit songs. We’d heard her sing with the dance band and were looking forward to the show. The song was about singers from Detroit, so it ranged from Motown to The Wiz to Madonna. Unlike most of the shows she had minimal production stuff – no pre-recorded backing tracks, very little multi-media on the screen behind. Her patter and her singing were both well above average. It was our favorite show so far and we’re looking forward to her next one.

After the show we took a brief walk to 6-Forward. I forgot to mention that Dave went to the front desk to see if he could swap out our binoculars which were out of collimation, and what ended up happening was an officer brought a brand new pair to the cabin while we were out on the balcony. So we have good binoculars now. Then we came back to the cabin and watched Frank Farris’s patterns talk, which was interesting but not as fabulous as the first one. We needed to get it watched because we’re having lunch with him tomorrow.

Then it was bedtime. Dave is feeling better but still needing extra rest, and I don’t mind a little extra myself.
